Garbage Pickup To Start Earlier In Batavia Due To Winter Storm

BATAVIA, IL — The remainder of this week’s garbage pickup in Batavia has been altered slightly due to the forecast winter storm, officials announced.

Waste Management will start refuse and recycling collection at 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. Thursday “in the attempt to get the collection done before weather gets too bad.” Friday’s pickup will be postponed to 6 a.m. Saturday.

In addition to the snow expected to start Thursday afternoon, wind gusts up to 55 mph and dangerously cold temperatures as low as 25 to 30 below zero are likely on Thursday night and Friday, Patch reported.

In Batavia, City Hall will be open as a warming center starting Thursday until Dec. 29, officials announced Wednesday. Visitors are asked to check in at the front desk when they arrive.

The warming center, at 100 N. Island Ave., will open 24 hours a day for the benefit of the elderly, families with small children and other vulnerable residents.

City officials said they cannot provide sleeping accommodations, dedicated hygiene or washing facilities or refrigerators for food storage.
